DEEP AND TOUCHING SPEECH BY THE UN HUMANITARIAN CHIEF TOM FLETCHER. BUT UNFORTUNATELY, ONE OF THE MANY SPEECHES WITH NO ACTIONS.

The politics within the UN have become unbearable, with powerful politicians playing with the lives of innocent and vulnerable civilians, including children. The ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip would have elicited a completely different response had it occurred in Europe. Yet once again, we witness the UN’s slow and feeble reactions when the victims are from Africa, the Middle East, or Asia.

If the roles were reversed, if Russia committed even half of the atrocities Israel is carrying out in Palestine with the tacit backing of global powers, there is no doubt swift, decisive action would have been taken, potentially even risking World War III. But Israel operates with gross impunity: blocking UN humanitarian aid, attacking aid workers, and violating countless international laws without meaningful consequences. Empty condemnations pile up while sanctions remain absent, proving that some nations are above accountability simply because they are shielded by powerful allies.

How can the UN claim legitimacy when its structures are held hostage by the very nations meant to be restrained by them? If Israel can defy international law, ignore humanitarian principles, and even exert control over UN mechanisms without repercussion, what purpose does the UN truly serve? The world sees this injustice, yet powerlessness prevails. The system is broken, and the silence of those who could act is deafening.
